Summer reading for science lovers

April 26, 2007

Boys tend to prefer non-fiction.  High school boys may be ready for these science-themed New York Times bestsellers.

  • The Devil’s Teeth by Susan Casey.  Spellbinding account of observing great white shark behavior.
  • 1491 by Charles C. Mann.  Explores the theories and evidence about what the Americas were really like before Columbus.
  • Guns, Germs & Steel by Jared Diamond.  How geography determined which civilizations became the “haves” and “have nots”.   Also available in video.  (Parental discretion: female nudity among natives of New Guinea.)
  • An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore.  Outlines the arguments that global warming is real and, particularly in the book, what we can do about it.

All four books (and the two videos) are available at Coppell Public Library.
