Update on Gifted Education Legislation

May 5, 2009

April 29th
HB 3, a major piece of education legislation that reworks the entire accountability and testing system in Texas, now includes gifted education.  For more information see the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented website.  Currently, there are no standards for the evaluation of gifted and talented programs in Texas.

SB 3 and HB 3 passed with unanimous votes in the Senate and House today.  Both bills contain gifted education accountability!  These bills now move to a conference committee comprised of members from both chambers to hash out the details.  While this is good news for gifted students, there is hope that a financial incentive might also be added to GT accountability through the school finance bill.  Stay tuned…
