Gifted Matters: December 2012

December 18, 2012

Welcome to the December 2012 edition of Gifted Matters. Can you believe it is December already and the year is coming to a close? The past month has been busy and eventful. The Texas Association of the Gifted and Talented  (TAGT) conference taking place right here in Dallas at the end of November provided a wonderful opportunity for professionals and parents to learn more about gifted education.

The TAGT presents awards to individuals in recognition of service, contribution, and commitment to gifted education. We are extremely pleased to inform you that CISD superintendent Dr. Jeff Turner was recently honored by TAGT with the coveted Friend of the Gifted Award. This honor has only been given twice since its inception and is given to an individual who has shown great support for gifted education. Please join us in thanking Dr. Turner for everything he does to improve the education for gifted students. Read more in the article Dr. Turner receives TAGT’s coveted award: Friend of the Gifted.

TAGT has also recognized our very own Tracy Fisher, founder of the Coppell Gifted Association, as the 2012 TAGT State Parent of the Gifted, for her outstanding efforts advocating on behalf of gifted children. Please join us in congratulating her and thanking her for her outstanding work and dedication in meeting the unique needs of gifted and talented individuals! High school is all about making the most of the opportunities available and at CHS, the opportunities and choices are plenty. There is something to meet every student’s needs and in the article Advanced Academics in High school, we have highlighted and described all the options available to your student.

Every year, nine students from Coppell High School compete in a rigorous competition that truly stretches their academic abilities- the Academic Decathlon. We talked with AcDec coach Tim Dixon and past coach Donnette Alexander about how the Academic Decathlon is so much more than just an academic competition. Read about what they had to say and learn more about the Academic Decathlon in the article Academic Decathlon-much more than an academic competition.

As always, our 5th annual Creative Writing Competition has been a tremendous success. We received 339 entries, over 70 entries more than last year. Read more about it in the article Creative Writing Competition- Update
