2013-14 CISD Educator & Administrator Scholarships Available
Since the start of the Coppell Gifted Association 7 years ago, funds have been raised to send 158 teachers and administrators to conferences outside of our district, and 54 to conferences outside of Texas.
With the aid of knowledgeable speakers combined with close proximity, CGA has provided143 scholarships to the annual Texas Association of Gifted and Talented Conference. This year’s conference is being held December 4-6 in Houston at the Hyatt Regency and the George R. Brown Convention Center. This conference focuses on the areas of Finance, Policy and Planning, Leadership Development, Membership Involvement, Communications and a personal favorite, Advocacy. Building on the theme of “Gifted and Beyond,” keynote speaker Dr. Joyce Juntune will kick-off the event featuring over 150 training sessions in 15 designated subjects. TAGT is an approved provider of CE credit for educators and school board members.
This is the third year that a parent conference will also be held in conjunction with the educator conference. Presentations on December 6th will focus on parenting strategies, meeting the social and emotional needs of gifted youth, educational enrichment and other relevant topics.
CGA’s scholarship committee recently revamped the application process, creating a separate application for educators and administrators. As we feel it is important to gain administrative support at the campus level, the principal must sign off on the application and agree to provide substitute teaching in the absence of the teacher who is awarded a scholarship to conference.
Upon return from conference, the educator agrees to provide a summary of the sessions attended, suggested speakers for future district/CGA events, and the understanding that they are willing to share this info learned at a CISD or CGA event. Administrators are asked to share their conference findings at a CGA monthly communications committee meeting; comprised of partial CGA Board, student and adult event coordinators, plus a representative from each CISD campus. TAGT also conducts regional conferences, the next being held at Chapin High School in El Paso on October 5th. It will include a 6-hour Educator Training Conference with a concurrent parent conference in the afternoon. Dr. Joyce Juntune, who spoke for CISD in June as well as CGA in the past, will be the keynote speaker.
On November 7-10, 2013, the 60th Annual Convention for the National Association for Gifted Children will be held in Indianapolis, IN. The same 15 topic strands are covered but on a larger scale providing 400+ content-rich sessions. Keynote speakers include: Milton Chen, John Green, Ashley Merryman, and S. Craig Watkins. More details can be found here. CGA has sent 16 CISD educators/administrators to this conference in the past and is excited to again have representation from our district at the largest annual convention devoted to gifted and talented learners.
